Keith Irby, BS
Secretary
Tae Awards Foundation
Secretary

Keith Eric Irby is a proud participant in the efforts of TAE Awards to honor our best and brightest academicians at historically black colleges and universities (H.B.C.U.) Graduating in 2015 with a B.S. in Psychology, he is one-of- seven, in his immediate family to graduate from the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), the second oldest H.B.C.U. Keith, a native Washingtonian, currently works with high school students in an alternative school that serves those who are learning disabled, behaviorally challenged, over aged and under credited in a non-traditional classroom setting using art as a tool in behavior management, facilitating academic achievement and post-secondary success preparation.
A Behavioral Specialist at Kingsman Academy Public Charter School in N.E. Washington, D.C., which accepts students city-wide, Keith leads a small class of students in the Integrated Art Program (IAP)where he employs preventative behavioral strategies and academic instruction which he acquired through many opportunities observing in the classrooms of his parents and countless family discussions during holiday dinners where four siblings held teaching positions. Prior to working at Kingsman, Keith spent a year working in youth detention in Washington and Maryland employing restorative practices as a means of righting wrongs and healing, as well as drama and theatrical strategies to aid youth in behavior modification. Keith developed these skills and knowledge from a nearly twelve-year stint as a performer on stage, tv and film, industrials, local and national commercials, and voice and print productions.
Keith has been a member of the Eastern Board of Officials, Inc. for more than thirty years beginning in 1992 officiating football in pee wee, junior high, middle school, high school, college, amateur and semi pro adult leagues in D.C. and the surrounding area. His favorite position on the gridiron was the umpire, where he was able to have consistent, close influence on the temperature of the contest using preventative strategies to mitigate tense or combative situations in emotionally charged full contact athletic contests. Imbued with a love of history by his father, and being told about the rich history of EBO by senior membership, Keith began a more than twenty-year research journey beginning in 2001, into the early history of EBO and its founder Edwin Bancroft Henderson.
This led to his receiving a life-time appointment as Historian of the Eastern Board of Officials by President Roosevelt McIlwain. As his research continued, Keith was asked to serve as a committee member of the Dr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson Memorial Project honoring E.B. the “Grandfather of Black Basketball”. It was successful in naming the first building, erecting the first statue and establishing an endowed scholarship all in Dr. Henderson’s honor on the campus of the University of the District of Columbia.
